lectures

With the support of JISC (part of the Higher Education Funding Council of England) www.theFaculties.org has made approximately 300 films of lecturers speaking on themes and topics from the A-level curriculum.

More than 30 of those themes are in Psychology  – see www.thepsychologyfaculty.org  More will follow in the coming weeks. The videos also offer advice to A-level students about where they might study Psychology at University, and about the careers that can follow their degree. .

Although this resource has only just been launched it is promised that in time it will cover the entire UK A-level curriculum. It is possible on the site for Psychology teachers and students to suggest further topics and ways in which the expertise of academic Psychologists can be employed in the secondary school classroom.

David Buss, from the University of Texas, is probably the best known evolutionary psychologist, having researched and written about a evolutionary explanations for a range of behaviour, including mating strategies, jealousy, homocide, rape and stalking.

Teachers are invited to a one day INSET course on Monday 21 March.

    • David Buss will talk on Why students love evolutionary Psychology … and how to teach it.
    • The programme also features Christian Jarrett, editor of the BPS Digest.

There is also a student conference on Wednesday 23 March, tickets £20.

    • The aim of the day is to expose students to the wonder of psychology. While some talks may not be directly relevant to their studies, they will come away inspired!
    • David Buss will talk on Strategies of human mating. This is a fascinating topic and one that communicates a deeper understanding of evolutionary psychology.
    • The programme also features Claudia Hammond (BBc’s All in the Mind), and talks from Phil Banyard, Mike Cardwell and Cara Flanagan.
