The Complete Companion (second edition) is now available and I am sure that many schools, and colleges will adopt it (and perhaps Coco the cat too) as their set textbook for AQA (A) AS psychology.

The first edition of this best selling textbook was published by Nelson Thornes in 2003 and this second edition is published by Folens.

This textbook is again written by Cara Flanagan and Mike Cardwell and is mapped onto the new 2008 AQA (A) specifications.

Not surprisingly, the book is very impressive. It is called the complete companion because it provides everything an AS psychology student will need to be successful at AQA (A) AS psychology. The book covers all of the topics and skills needed for the new specification and provides exam tips throughout.

There are some great activities included and my favourite bits are the brief biographies of some of the researchers covered in the book. I was very impressed with the quality of the layout and design of the book. The textbook has an improved layout, more colours, more images and the paper is glossier and is of a better quality than the first edition. The only downside to this is that it weighs more.

The book is also supported by a fine, free online blog, which already has articles related to the book

Fully tailored to the new 2008 AQA(A) Psychology specification this resource is supported by Student CD-ROM and a Network Edition CD-ROM for teachers. Being aware of the challenges difficulty teachers and students will be facing with the new 2008 specifications, it is our aim to provide teachers with leading expert advice and support. With this in mind and to maintain the complete support that teachers know and trust, we have chosen the leading expert authors to write our AQA(A) resources.

All of our A level psychology resources are complemented by Dynamic Learning CD-ROMs which will give you flexible support in the classroom and inspire your students.

Dynamic Learning is the e-learning platform that helps you to bring your subject to life for students, powerfully and simply.

“Arguably, the transition to e-learning, and beyond that to personalisation, will only be made if the content can be transitioned alongside the process in such a way that both teacher and learner can retain a sense of the structure and shape of the learning process that equates to the security provided by traditional learning materials. If this argument is accepted then Hodder Dynamic Learning deserves a “best of breed” award”.

I forgot to mention that I received my pre-ordered copy of this book a few weeks ago from Palgrave.com As far as I know this is the first textbook to be published for the new 2008 specifications.

This is the third edition of the text designed to cover the new studies added to the OCR specifications. If you are planning to teach the OCR specifications, I do recommend the book. The authors have added 14 clear and accurate studies now making a total of 84 research studies.

As in earlier editions, the studies are accessible, lively and engaging. The authors have a real knack of summarising the studies in a wider context and demonstrating the limitations of the empirical research without knocking the stuffing out of the studies as some textbooks do.

I pre-ordered my first copy and then ordered a few more for work and the latter came within three days when ordered through Palgrave.

The only criticism I have of this text is that it does not cover the Sue Savage-Rumbaugh study, although in the authors’ defence this was a late addition to the specifications.

Phil and Cara are also working on a new edition of their OCR Psychology AS Core Studies text (Psychology Press) which will cover the whole of the AS OCR specifications.

This will be the first of a number of posts on which books are going to be available for the new specifications.

As you may know, the awarding bodies all now have their own “official partners” and for psychology OCR have gone to bed with Heinemann

Heinemann are to publish an AS Book (available from March 2008) and an A2 book (available from September 2008).

Apparently, both books come with a free CD, which will have “a wealth of extra exam preparation in an exciting interactive format” and the A2 book covers all four of the options.

For a whopping £250 each you can also buy an A2 Psychology Planning and Delivery Resource File and CD-ROM, and an AS Psychology Planning and Delivery Resource File and CD-ROM

You can find more details here where you can also view a sample of the books.

Of course, there will be many non-endorsed books available for OCR psychology. So far I have noticed that their will be a new edition of the wonderful Introducing Psychological Research by Banyard and Grayson which will cover the new studies for AS and has an extended chapter on methods and statistics. I have already ordered my copy, which is due out in December.

As more books become available, I will let you know.
